How Dancing My truth Awakened His Joy...

So far, we danced in the rain, the wind and short sunny spells and you know
what…it all felt right! Just like Mother Nature knows exactly how to dance
with us!

That Saturday morning, I knew that I would start dancing “on my own” - none
of my students and friends could make it! I arrived at Todmorden ‘s Market
and set up my music system and Nia posters telling everyone that this wasn’t
a demo but a “Dance Break”, inviting every “body” to dance with me…next
to me…around me…above me !!

The first person coming through did not do any of that! He was an old man
(late 80s) who chose to sit on a nearby bench and watch me…and my dancers
to come ! We didn’t speak but he said at one point “The music sounds
nice”, I smiled and replied “Yes, I love the Nia music”! Having no idea of
the magic that was about to happen.

I was delighted when, soon after this, a young 10 year old girl came and
danced with me…no one else did for a few tracks but it was just perfect!
She was shy and quiet, we happily danced, we smiled a lot and we laughed. I
might never see her again but I’d like to think this experience gave her a
taste of what it’s like to give herself permission to just BE and dance…no
matter who’s watching! Eventually, her grand-ma, who sat and watched with
eyes of love the whole time told her it was time to leave “the dance floor”.
She could have danced much longer!

Here’s when the magic’s coming…

Then a young couple arrived and sat down…it didn’t take much persuasion
for “the girl” to join me. She was also shy but there she was, now dancing
with me, chatting and loving the experience. It also wasn’t long before her
boyfriend joined us: “I like the music, what is it?” “This is the Nia Dance
music”, I said, “It’s got the knack to make people get up and dance…just
like you did! LOL…..

Now’s the highlight of my story…

Nearly an hour had gone by since I arrived. As I was busy free dancing and
chatting to this lovely couple, “the old man” surprised me and poked me on
the back, got hold of my hands and started to twirl me around “the dance
floor” ...WOW…it really felt like he knew what he was doing. I chose to
surrender and let him lead what turned out to be rock’n roll - Samba - walse
all at once…

He looked so happy and alive. I felt so flattered and special!

The track ended and he got his wallet out of his pocket????? I could tell he
wanted to show me something special. And there were photographs of his
younger self (in his 60s!) at ballroom dancing events / competitions
surrounded by very attractive female dancers. It was very clear that he
cherishes those dancing years very dearly and he was so proud to share these
memories with us. I knew then that I truly revived his sparkling spirit and
his tired body…and that I maybe made his day…and you know what! He
surely made my day too:-) !! A memory that I will keep in the treasure chest
of my heart!

Who knows what the next dance break will bring?? Well,  I don’t! What I do
know is that Magic, Love and Beauty will always be there again and
again…for me…and for you too!
